We are delighted to share some very exciting news. Following a strong response from the community, Mark Faulkner’s mural design has been selected for the new artwork at 129 High Street.
Mark’s proposal, Our Special Lochaber Oaks, stood out for its deep connection to Fort William and the wider Lochaber area. Inspired by the sessile oak, a powerful symbol found on the town crest and woven through local history, the design celebrates strength, endurance and a shared sense of place.
The mural brings together heritage, folklore and everyday life in Lochaber. It tells a rich visual story that blends people, wildlife and myth, from echoes of ancient warriors to recognisable modern community figures. Every element has been carefully considered, creating a piece that feels both timeless and proudly local, with details that invite people to pause and look again.
Feedback from the engagement process showed clear support for a design that reflects Fort William’s identity, and Mark’s concept consistently resonated with residents, visitors and local businesses alike.
One of the most exciting aspects of this project is its strong community focus. Mark will be liaising with local primary schools and Room 13 to deliver creative workshops alongside the mural’s development. This will give young people the chance to contribute ideas and feel a real sense of ownership over a project that will shape the town centre for years to come.
By involving schools and youth groups, the mural becomes more than a finished artwork. It becomes a shared experience and a celebration of creativity across generations.
Thank you to everyone who has already confirmed their support for the final mural design. We are keen to hear from as many people as possible, so if you have not yet taken part, please do so by the end of today. This will allow us to progress approvals and move forward with delivery.
We are incredibly excited to see Our Special Lochaber Oaks come to life and to watch this collaboration between artist, young people and community transform the High Street.
