About the Event

Create your own tiny woven tapestry based on the mountain landscape and nature all around us. No experience of weaving or art required!

About the Explore Event

Create your own tiny woven tapestry based on the natural world around us. We’ll take our inspiration from the colours, shapes and textures of the mountain landscape around Fort William, using a simple frame and selection of yarns. The technique is very simple and Irene will show you the basics so that you can quickly get started. Think of it as a combination between relaxation, mindful creativity and appreciation of the outdoors.

If the weather’s on our side, we’ll walk a short way to the lochside, choose a spot with a view, and then settle to weave the view ‘live’. Dress warmly! If it’s raining, we’ll be warm and dry inside, using photos and drawings to fire up our imaginations and get weaving.

No experience necessary. All materials and equipment provided.

Accompanied children over the age of 12 welcome. Maximum 8 participants.

Inspired by the natural world, one of my favourite things is sitting somewhere outdoors ‘weaving the view’, distilling key elements of what I see to create a tapestry in just a few hours. When I look at the tapestry afterwards, I’m reminded of the birdsong, breeze and sense of wellbeing that I experienced while I was weaving. Living in Ardgour, and a keen trail runner, I am constantly inspired by the landscapes around me, particularly the combination of mountains, lochs and burns that I come across as I’m out and about locally.

My portfolio also includes much more in-depth studio-designed pieces, each the product of many hours, days and weeks of planning and weaving. And I love inspiring other people to be creative through the medium of tapestry weaving, often through participatory outdoor weaving experiences, but also through workshops and community projects.
