If you’ve recently walked along Fort William High Street, you may have noticed something new catching the eye — a striking mural now gracing the side of The Highland Bookshop. This vibrant piece of public art is more than decoration; it’s a story of family, healing, and the enduring creative spirit that links Scotland’s Highlands to New Zealand.
Who Painted the Mural?
The mural was created by Matt Thompson, a talented artist from New Zealand, who travelled to Fort William and generously gifted his time and skill to the community. Matt is known internationally for his work, so his decision to create this mural free of charge is a testament to the deep personal connection behind it.
The Personal Story That Inspired the Artwork
Matt’s grandfather was a prisoner of war in Eastern Europe during the Second World War. After his release, he came to the Scottish Highlands to recover and found kindness, friendship, and solace among Highland communities. To honour that history, Matt chose Fort William as the place to tell part of his family’s story.
The mural here will have a twin in Matt’s hometown in New Zealand, creating a visual bridge between two places half a world apart. That second piece will feature Florence, one of his grandfather’s dear friends from the Highlands. Matt and his family hope to meet Florence — now elderly — when they return to Fort William, health permitting.
Why the Mural Matters
Public art like this mural doesn’t just brighten a wall; it adds cultural depth and invites conversation. It reminds us that the Highlands have long been a place of refuge, renewal, and connection across borders. For Fort William, it’s also a sign of a growing creative movement — a place where artists are welcomed, stories are shared, and new work can take root.
